row of trucks lined up

Tom Quirk Automotive in Albuquerque, NM services all kinds of trucks, regardless of weight class. From small trucks to semi’s, we’ve got you covered. For the sake of curiosity, however, what classifies a truck as light or heavy-duty?

The answer isn’t technically as simple as one or the other. Trucks are classified by categories, being labeled as grade 1-8 depending on their weight at maximum capacity, with 1 being the lightest, and 8 being the heaviest. This system encompasses everything from the Ford Ranger to the biggest commercial semi.

For most intents and purposes, you can consider any truck below 26,000 pounds “light duty.” These trucks don’t normally pull a trailer, they don’t have air brakes, and they don’t require a CDL. Any truck over 26,000 pounds requires a special license and is subject to other regulations. Whether you drive a box truck or semi, trust our technicians at Tom Quirk Automotive to take care of your truck. Our diesel mechanics are experts in everything from oil changes, to fuel system maintenance, to engine rebuilds. If your truck needs maintenance or repair, we know what to do. Come in and see us today!
